# Motorway fuel prices — is it worth leaving the motorway?

Motorway service areas charge well above local forecourt prices — frequently 15p to 20p a litre more than a supermarket a couple of miles off the junction. Leaving the motorway to fill up almost always pays for the detour several times over.

## How much more motorway fuel costs

Motorway service areas typically charge 15–20p a litre more than a nearby supermarket.

## Why service areas charge more

High site costs — required to open 24/7 with free parking, toilets and drinking water.
A captive market: a driver low on fuel has no alternative in range.
A high share of fleet and business drivers on fuel cards, who have little incentive to detour.
There is no price cap on motorway fuel.

## Is the detour worth it?

Saving = price gap in pence × litres bought ÷ 100.
A ten-mile round trip in a 40mpg car costs about £1.60 in fuel.
Example: 15p/litre gap on a 50-litre fill = £7.50 saved for roughly £1.30 of detour fuel.
Not worth it for small top-ups, detours over ~5 miles off the junction, or when the fuel light is already on and the next junction is far.

## Where prices rise on long routes

South West peninsula beyond Exeter.
Mid and west Wales beyond Swansea.
Scottish Highlands beyond Stirling.
Fill before these stretches rather than during them.

## FAQ

### Why is motorway fuel so expensive?

Three reasons. Motorway service areas pay high rents on sites with strict operating obligations — they must stay open 24 hours and provide free parking and facilities. They have a captive market, since a driver low on fuel has no realistic alternative within reach. And they serve a high proportion of business and fleet drivers who are not paying personally. Together those let service areas hold prices well above local forecourts.

### How much more does motorway fuel cost?

Motorway service areas typically charge well above local forecourt prices — frequently 15p to 20p a litre more than a nearby supermarket.

### Is it worth leaving the motorway for fuel?

Usually, yes. A typical junction detour is two to four miles each way and costs a few minutes and well under a pound in fuel. If the saving is 15p a litre on a 50-litre fill, that is £7.50 — comfortably worth the detour. It stops being worth it only for very small top-ups or if the nearest alternative is a long way off the junction.

### Which motorway services have the cheapest fuel?

Prices vary by operator and by individual site. Rather than memorising which services are keener, check the [live map](https://cheapestfuel.uk/map/) before you set off — it shows both the service area price and every alternative near the junctions on your route.

### Are there rules about motorway fuel prices?

There is no price cap. The CMA's road fuel market study found weak competition in parts of the retail fuel market and led to the open price-reporting scheme that data like ours is built on, but service area operators remain free to set their own prices.
